Critiques
Both of the children are clearly caught up in the joy of getting candy without really putting much thought into the consequences (big smiles, outstretched arms, they're just barely restraining themselves). Meanwhile the candy lady just looks at them with a quiet, knowing smile, as though she just knows that they will go and chow down right after they're outside the shop and will feel sick to their stomachs. Still, they're very cute.
I find the composition of this piece to be very good with a few exceptions. I like how the area behind the counter is cluttered with shelves, candy, jars, and other various items. This helps balance out the image against the two children on the other side. The children are balanced by the window and the two written notices. However, I feel that there isn't enough emphasis on the people in this picture. They don't really stand out greatly from the background, probably because of how similar their colors are. Something else I notice is that there aren't any great contrasts in this piece. The light source is pretty uniform throughout. Perhaps if the light coming through the window were a bit stronger with effects on the characters, the piece would be stronger as a whole. It would help emphasize some of the lines on the characters. Of course, your sense of form and value is spot on. All of your shading and coloring work is good too, save what I mentioned before. However, there is a distinct lack of texture in this piece. Everything seems a bit too smooth and clean, except maybe the lady's tail. Even then, shouldn't there be a few chaotic lines thrown in there somewhere? Something that I just noticed, and I like this a lot, is that all the movement in the piece draws the eye to the candy on the counter. Since this is a piece about selling sweets, this is very cool and well done on your part.
Regardless, this is an immensely pleasing piece to look at and deserves praise. Some would say that the subject matter is a bit trite, but I personally like it. Mostly, I applaud your vision in this piece and how well balanced it is, not to mention how well the movement works.
